The Centre for the Study of Bible and Violence is delighted to invite you to an event to consider the UK church’s response to the growing threat of extreme right groups. Often such groups employ a rhetoric which may invoke apparently Christian theological themes such as ‘restoring a Christian Britain’, which may in fact be a code for preventing Muslim immigration or for establishing white supremacy.

With the assistance of a grant from the British Academy, we conducted a multi-disciplinary consultation in May 2023, bringing together the voices of practitioners, academics, Christian theologians, and people of other faiths, to examine this question from a broad range of perspectives. Out of that consultation, we will soon publish an edited book ‘The Church, the Far Right, and the Claim to Christianity’, which concludes with a concrete set of ten proposals to the UK church, but which we believe would be applicable beyond the UK. In anticipation of that publication, we are holding this event to present the results of our research with Dr Maria Power as chair, with the aim of stimulating discussion and action.

Wine, soft drinks and puddings will be provided.

Registration for this event is included in the Conference Ticket. If you would like to attend the book launch only, please ‘RSVP’ below.
